
World Cancer Day 2026
4th February 2026,the Public Health Department ‘s Non communicable disease unit (NCD) was alongside the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare together with NICRAT to commemorate the 2026 World Cancer Day with a Ministerial Press Briefing and the official launch of key national cancer policy documents, The event took place at Zuma Hall, Rockview Hotel ( Royale).
The programme featured welcome remarks, goodwill messages from partners (including WHO and UICC), and technical presentations reviewing Nigeria’s cancer control progress from 2008 to date.
The Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, officially launched:
• The National Nuclear Medicine Policy and Strategic Plan
• The Nigeria National Cancer Control Plan (2026–2030)
He also flagged off free cancer screening in Abuja for breast, cervical, prostate, and skin cancers (with focus on persons with albinism).
The Minister proceeded to FMC Jabi, where the free screening exercise commenced at the Preventive Oncology Clinic, part of a broader plan to activate specialized oncology centers nationwide and expand access to screening through NHIA support.
The event combined policy advancement, stakeholder engagement, and direct public health action to strengthen cancer prevention and care in Nigeria.
