About the Public Health Department

Public Health is one of the Departments of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, FCTA. It comprises of Three [3] Divisions namely; Disease Control, Epidemiology, and Environmental & Occupational Health, and the Admin, Accounts and Audit Units under the Director’s office. Fifteen [15] Units with a total number of Two Hundred and Fourteen [214] Staff and Eight [8] Casual Workers.

To provide comprehensive, integrated public health services for the FCT populace.

Our Vision

To provide effective and efficient public health services and programmatic information to all the people in the FCT with the intent of ensuring healthy people in healthy communities through promotion of health, disease prevention and prolongation of life.

Our Mission

To create and maintain an enabling environment within the FCT where every resident is empowered and fully mobilized for Health decision and to ensure sustenance of the provision of quality Public Health Services that guarantees convenience, availability, acceptability a d accessibility for all people.

Objectives

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, monitor and evaluate Public Health Programmes and activities in FCT
  • Ensure continuous, active and sustained surveillance on epidemic prone diseases and other response to outbreaks
  • Embark on public health enlightenment activities on prevailing health issues that will raise the level of awareness of the inhabitants thereby encouraging them to imbibe the culture of seeking early medical care that will promote their health
  • Build the capacity of all public health staff in the FCT for quality service delivery
  • Provide technical assistance to the Area councils for effective public health programme implementation
  • Periodically conduct public health inspection in regulated premises to ensure compliance with public health Laws.
  • Regulate all registered fumigation outfits operating within the FCT in order to standardize practice especially pertaining to pests control in regulated premises of public health/Environmental Health.
  • Ensure that the health of all FCT workers is in top form and that every worker is guaranteed of his/her safety at his/her workplace.
  • Provide Health advice to all international travellers, ensure vaccination and issuance of valid International Certification of Vaccine [i.e yellow fever]
  • Sensitize and mobilize FCT populace on Public Health Programmes/activities for their involvement and participation
  • Liaise with and Coordinate the activities of all collaborating agencies, NGOs/CBOs, Development Partners and other Government Ministries on Public Health programmes and activities.
  • Collaborate with other bodies and conduct regular research/survey on issues of Public Health importance for effective programme planning and development of appropriate interventions/policies.
