*FCT Public Health Team Responds Swiftly to Suspected Cholera Alert in Ledi II Community*
In line with ongoing efforts to sustain a cholera-free Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Cholera Technical Working Group on 2nd April 2026 led a rapid response to an alert of five suspected cholera cases in Ledi II Community, Dobi Ward, Gwagwalada Area Council.
The response was carried out in collaboration with the Health Promotion and Education Division of the department, Area Council Disease Surveillance Team, and WHO Field Volunteer.
The five affected persons, all members of the same household, initially presented at health facility with vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming the same meal.
Following the alert, the response team conducted a detailed field investigation, community entry/advocacy with the Community Chief, while the Health Promotion team carried out household sensitization on proper food handling, hand hygiene, and the avoidance of open defecation.
Medical response commodities were also prepositioned to strengthen preparedness for any additional cases.
Further response activities included active case search within the community and supportive supervision at Dobi PHC, with a review of the OPD register to identify any related cases.
Preliminary environmental assessment showed that the community’s major water source is borehole water, with no immediate evidence of unsafe water exposure observed during the visit.
All five cases were successfully managed, discharged alive, and remain in stable condition without complications.
This swift multi-sectoral response highlights the FCT Administration’s commitment to early detection, rapid response, and prevention of cholera outbreaks across communities in the FCT.
